What is OpenAI-compatible API?
In short
An API that follows the OpenAI request and response format, so existing client code works unchanged.
An OpenAI-compatible API accepts requests in the same format as OpenAI's and returns responses in the same shape. That means SDKs, frameworks and prompt code written for one provider usually run against another by changing a base URL. AI/ML API, 4everland, Aptible, Apache APISIX AI Gateway and Alibaba Cloud DashScope (Qwen) all expose this compatibility. The payoff is portability: you can compare model quality and cost across vendors, and switch the endpoint without touching the surrounding code.
